I've mostly just lurked on this forum, but this matchup is interesting so I thought I'd post.

To me, Guren + Gaara is an unstoppable force verses Hidan + Shikamaru.

Even with the full knowledge about what Gaara and Guren are capable of, I don't think that there's anything that Shikamaru can plan to do about it. Especially with a partner like Hidan.

We have to think about how much synergy Gaara and Guren actually have... Gaara can create and manipulate massive amounts of sand to encase/crush his enemies. And.. any time she wants.. Guren can turn that sand into Crystal. Gaara provides Guren with almost an infinite amount of possibilites with her crystals, which would create a full out war between the two teams.

I know Shikamaru has the capabilities to predict the deadly combination, but Hidan is almost worthless as a partner. Especially since both Gaara and Guren have armor techniques, making it extremely difficult for Hidan to draw blood from one of them.

I think the fight would end from one of Gaara's unavoidable Sand Burrials and Guren turning the sand into Crystal.

The only chance Shiki+Hidan would have is if they avoided Guren and Gaara until they ran out of Chakra... but we know from experience that Shikamaru has a lot less chakra than most people in the story, and he'll have to use his techniques more than just a couple of times.

In the end, I think its Gaara and Guren, hands down.

nice analyzation thx!

I agree with Daelan00.
Mitsuhide Akechi
I agree also with Daelan. Gaara and Guren both compliment each other when it comes to attacks and defenses. And if both knew about Hidans abilities then I'm sure Gaara and Guren are smart enough to come up with a plan that negates his move while staying away from Shikimarus shadow control. IMO this battle seems sort of one sided. I really can't see anything that Shikimaru and Hidan have as a team over Gaara and Guren. Interesting match though but still one sided. IMO of course.
ntraghu26
i agree with whole lot of u,i mean it would have been a good fight if Shikamaru is partnered by some one else, say kakuzu; then it would have been a damm good battle n much more unpredictable; As Shikamaru's partner is Hidan who is almost a reckless guy,Gaara n Guren would win without a doubt. The deciding point in this battle,i feel is Hidan,He is not the weakest among all,but somehow he is very reckless...
iiT4CHii
i agree and the fact that he is also the slowest akatsuki means he isn't very fast considering how fast can a venus fly trap (Zetsu) move??
Craeyon
i guess the match was one-sided after all.
DJSugar62
to me i dont think anybody can defeat Gaara unless they have a tailed beast, or can fly. His sand will just flatten in top of u and harden. All dat weight will kill u
jamrock
i definitely understand where all of you are coming from, BUT i have to disagree. I think you all are only looking at it on the surface. This is NOT a one-sided fight at all. There are endless possibilities in this. Bear with me for a second:
1) first of all....in EVERY action manga/anime/tv show/movie, etc, there is NO fighter that uses 100% of their power right from the start. They always kinda build it up saving their better moves for last. So to say that Gaara will start out with Desert Burial or something of that magnitude is not a gurantee.
3) Gaara's sand burial didn't even work against Kimimaru...and he was injured. (if he hadn't been sick, he would have beat Gaara) Hidan is even more invulnerable and has backup to help him with Shikamaru if gets to that point
4) The key in this scenario is that all fighters know the capabilities of the others. There are at least 2 or 3 initial options that come to my mind as to how team Shikamaru can get the upper hand. (i'll describe one at the end of this post)
5) Guren's abilities are dependent on her hands.....Gaara's aren't since he has the "special sand" in his gourd (fused with his chakra) which can react to defend him subconciously. Nobody can argue that it is highly possible for Shikamaru to catch Guren in a shadow bind. Her crystal style is useless against the shadows. And even though she knows what Shikamaru can do, he is way smarter and can lure her into a trap.
6) Nothing Gaara can do (that i can think of) can kill Hidan. Guren's crystal style might be able to kill Hidan if she encases him in it then makes it shatter. So all in all, Shikamaru has an edge over Guren with his shadows, and over Gaara with his brain. Guren has an edge over Hidan with her crystal style. Hidan has an edge over Gaara with his immortality.
7) Although Gaara is definitely powerful, for the person that said he can't be beat unless it's by someone else with a tailed beast........didn't he get beat by Deidara??? And Hidan IS a member of that same powerful organization - Akatsuki. Don't underestimate Hidan.

Fight starts..............Shikamaru tells Hidan to distract Gaara while he focuses on Guren. They lead Gaara and Guren to a slight distance away from each other in order to prevent them from working together. Gaara stands with his arms crossed while Hidan unleashes a fury of slashing attacks with his scythe. Gaara's "special sand" blocks each attack until Hidan takes it up a notch with some slow yet powerful blows which startle Gaara. Gaara then unleashes a barrage of sand bullets which are ineffective against Hidan. Gaara steps it up and takes out the "spear of Shikaku" and a slashing battle with Hidan continues....

meanwhile.....Shikamaru has already led Guren into a trap using some string and some kunai in which he is able to set up a "shadow web" and eventually catch Guren in a shadow possession. He quickly yells to Hidan....NOW! Hidan comes over, slashes Guren and then begins his ritual to link their bodies. (this is the crucial part because it depends on how long it takes Hidan to set it up....for this case I'll say he does it quickly)

Guren is then killed by Hidan...........................OR Shikamaru controlls her movements so that they can use her crystal style against Gaara. (i don't know if Shikamaru can control a person with his technique to the extent that he can force them to use their jutsu so I'll say that if so, they are able to defeat Gaara easily enough.....if not, the story continues below)

With Guren out of the way, Shikamaru puts his already formed plan to defeat Gaara into play. The combination of Hidan's indestructible abilities and Shikamaru's GENIUS and shadow tech, prove too much for Gaara as he is crushes Hidan in a sand burial but is caught in a shadow strangle tech by Shikamaru which his "special sand" can not defend against. Hidan then emerges from underground (after all, it's just sand.....once Gaara is distracted and looses control of his chakra by Shikamaru's shadow tech, the pressure will ease up and Hidan can dig himself out)

While Shikamaru is struggling to keep Gaara in the shadow tech, Hidan comes and draws blood and delivers the final blow.

It's not always all about who is more powerful. Brains, luck, and an ability that is naturally strong against your opponents ability goes a long way. (i.e. Shikamaru's shadow can't be crystalized by Guren)
dissapointednaruto
I really liked that analysis!!!
Kudos my friend...

Now, one of the main problems shika and hidan will have in this match is the fact that the gourd protects gaara even without his consent, so it is kind of difficult to get gaara to bleed, which will make him to some extent invulnerable to hidan's ritual...
I would certainly believe that with previous analysis Shika can come up with a plan to defeat gaara and guren....
however, the fact that the match is extremely uneven, makes it REALLY difficult...

I'd say 80% prob that gaara and guren win...

20% Shika can manage to form a successful plan...

Shikamaru, as smart as he is ,is mainly a support character in battle (or a great leader for a team). He alone will have a great deal of trouble with either one of the 2 powerhouses that guren and gaara are.
Hidan, unfortunately has only ONE ability (at least as far as we know), and once that ability is known by the opposite team it makes it even more difficult( in addition to the whole gaara doesn't bleed easy issue) for shika's team.

Daelan00
I respect your analysis Jamrock, but I have to disagree.

I recognize that Shikamaru is a genius, but Gaara and Guren are both capable shinobi; Gaara himself being the Kazekage.

Hidan is not particularly fast, even if Shikamaru caught Guren and tried to hold her while Hidan drew blood, Gaara could very easily get to her first and protect her with his own sand.

While death may not be an option for Hidan, containment still is. All they have to do is imprison him (both Gaara and Guren are adept at that), until the fight is over.

Really, when you think about it, when you fight Gaara you almost fight two people. The tailed beast acting on it's own accord makes it unbelievable difficult to draw blood from Gaara, and if Guren is on the same team, she is under the same protection.

Going off of your scenario, Jamrock, this is how I see it happening.

Fight starts, Shikamaru and Hidan successfully separate Gaara and Guren. Hidan's slow attacks are easily blocked by Gaara's sand. Hidan lands some powerful attacks that throw Gaara off balance...here is the difference... Gaara is a defensive shinobi. Recognizing that Hidan is majorly a close combat ninja, Gaara uses his sand to float in the sky. Gaara then presses his offense on Hidan while Hidan tries to throw his weapon (easily blocked).

Meanwhile, Shikamaru is successful in capturing Guren. He shouts the signal to Hidan to come and draw her blood. Hidan is not known for his speed, however, and in their attempt to split up Gaara and Guren there is a fair distance for Hidan to travel; Gaara's sand is faster, tripping up and trapping Hidan.

That wouldn't be the end though. Shikamaru is brilliant, he would find a way to pull Hidan out of it, and it would be a very long and drawn out battle. However, I think in the end Gaara and Guren would pull out all the stops, right when shikamaru's limited chakra reserve begins to falter, and an avalanche of sand and crystal would bring the fight to and end.

EDIT: Hidan's rash impatience should also be taken into account. If the fight goes on too long and Shikamaru's plans are not drawn out for him, Hidan could lose his cool and just follow his own plan. I know that they get along, but Hidan is a bit dim, and definitely impatient. His personality and fighting habits would clash with Shikamaru's, even if they were friends.
jamrock
Good point on the fact that the "gourd will still protect Gaara in the end" part DissapointedNaruto.....i still feel that if he is binded by Shika's shadows then enough strength from Hidan might be able to break through at that point

Also, good point on that "Gaara uses his sand to float in the sky" part Daelan! That's a big factor that I left out.

As I said before too though, the crucial part will be how quick Hidan is when Shika's captures Guren.

If he is too slow AND the fact about the whole "Gaara aerial attacks"........then you guys are right, Gaara and Guren it is.
zangetska
I go with guren and gaara there attcks are similar and both u unique ht eonly draw bac is when guren uses big jutsu she seems to lose alot of chakra i think guren would be on the offense and gaara on the defense. but shikamaru and his shadows might mess up gaara cuz the sand may cast a shadow or sumthing as long as they dont get caught in that theyll win they'll cut off hidan head and put it in a ditch or sumthin. Garra+ Guren FTW.

And another thing Deidara beat Gaara because he was fighting and protecting his village so thats plays a role.
