Since this is my thing, it is a bit difficult to recommend stuff, cause I like quite a bit of stuff. I am not sure what genres you are into, so here are a few suggestions of talented groups (or individuals) that you should at least check out and see if they are your kind of stuff.
Rock
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come, Songs toFan the Flames of Discontent
Green Day - American Idiot
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Mars Volta - Frances the Mute, De-Loused in the Comatorium
AFI - Black Sails in the Sunset, Sing the Sorrow
New Order (w00t 80's) - Get Ready...they have a lot of stuff out, most is pretty good.
Rocket From the Crypt - anything
if you like dance punk/rock or death disco stuff check out
The Killers - Hot Fuss
Bravery - Bravery
The Faint - Wet From Birth, Danse Macabre, Blank-Wave Arcade
LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
Kasabian - Kasabian
Radio 4 - Stealing of a Nation
Im a huge Trance and Drum and Base, electronica in general fan.
DJ Z-Trip - Shifting Gears (turntablism/hip hop)
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing, Private Press (downtempo hip hop)
VNV Nation - Futureperfect, praise the fallen, empires (industrial)
Everything But the Girl - Adapt or die (remixed jazz band-tons of styles)
Daft Punk - Homework, Discovery, Human After All (House)
DJ DB - The Higher Education of Drum 'n' Bass, The secret art of science, 10 (DnB)
Max Graham (w00t canadian DJs) - Transport 4 (trance)
High Contrast - High Society (DnB)
Chris Gin - Logic Trance 3 (trance)
Mars & Mystre - Faith in 2000 (trance)
Mars - Sonic Sunrise, the mysteries within (trance)
Mystre - mysterium, mystified (trance)
Hybrid - Wider Angle (breaks)
Avalanches - Since I left you (turntablism on 8 turntables people 8!) (definately check out frontier psychiatrist it is the best track on the album)
Nostrum - Requiem (trance)
Propellerheads - decksanddrumsandrockandroll (hip hop)
I have tons more suggestions but this is what I came up with off the top of my head. If you like any one of these, I can give you similar sounding bands/artists. Anyways, hope you like them.

Bah.. I listen to rock music most of the time, so naturally I'll recommend that genre.. You didn't mention what type you like..
>> Lost Prophets - Start Something album (my fave!! did I said that before?) It consists of nice beats and rythem and I love most of their songs..
>> Greenday - American Idiot
>> Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue, and Sum41 - Chuck (lighter notes of rock, but still good enough to listen to again and again)

If you want some music from the past, I really suggest listening to The Beatles. There stuff is great and they change quite a bit throughout their career. I suggest the album Revolver, I like it alot of sgt. peppers lonely hearts club band.
I also suggest getting anything by Led Zeppellin or Pink Floyd. Puts these new bands in their place.
