What do you mean? Are you talking about my Haruhi signature? If you are, yes I thought it was a good anime. Its supposed to be happy and girly, and no its not perverted or based off of a hentai.

Sure. Im about halfway done with my entry, started it about an hour ago. I found the pic this morning, although it was quite a tossup for which to use. A lot of good renders exist for this anime.

Danny, if you dont like it, feel free to do any edit on it if you like.

It's the text on it that I don't like that much. I think I'll leave it at that. I've got other sigs and banners to make.

Heh, we both went for a similar pic. Although mine doesnt fit the scene awfully well, it is a chibi character and they are meant to be exaggerated and different anyways.

Could be better, but I tried a lot of new things that ive never done before. Its good, but the background kind of needs work imo. I really like it though.

That was a first for me. I havent done much of that stuff yet, and found out how to do scanlines and such after I made that sig. Could have been better if I did it like that. I made anoter sig since this one, I posted it in the showoff forum. Its of the anime Berserk, and I used it to better effect. Im starting to get the hang of it, and since im lazy I figured I would do a battle and have the opponent choose what to create.

Oh man, I'm really regretting entering this now. You two do alot better work than me.

You just gotta look at other people's work and find out what you like about theirs and try to incorporate it into your own work without totally stealing there design. I used to screw around in photoshop early on in high school, but all I would do it make a could render and do as many effects to it as possible and try to make a cool texture. I never made anything worth using. And just recently I picked it up again after being inspired by a few of the signatures I have seen around here, and have only made about 8 signatures.

But Eternal - It's not at all about taking styles from others. It's about avoiding the mistakes of others imo.

Come up with your own style with an old fasioned pen and paper, and mucking about on PS to get effects you like.

By all means look at the techniques that others use, pixel stretching, gaussian/soft light, Blur blending, gradients over clouds, etc.

Half the time when I try to do styles of others, I don't like what I come up with, and almost allways go back to my own style which is a style I came up with when looking at what's wrong with other people's signatures.

Red girly abstract one = Copy of Kami's current style.
Ishida and Geass sigs = Copy of Med's style (albeit very badly)
UT2007, Hellgate London, Neocron sigs = My style.

Infact, my current sig has a representation of all 3 styles lawl.


The reasons you feel your sigs are weak, is because you're spending too much effort trying to copy others, and not enough effort trying to improve on others. Truth of the matter is that you'll never be able to do someone else's style as well as they can, so instead work out what's wrong with theirs, which is the best way to improve imo.

That being said, your Med attempt in the Yuki sig in this thread is good enough to compete with Med's own, although it's alot less complex (the one Med made me is at least 30 layers - He's a freaking nutter.... Honestly, if you looked at the PSD he sent me.... The amount of detail is immense - His eye for composition is frightening beyond belief. It's not even random blending like I do, or 10 adjustment layers like I do, it's all carefully positioned colours and patterns which you can barely see in the final product.)

Only problem with your sig is the huge lack of quality on the musical notes, but it's forgivable, I doubt you're as much of a perfectionist as me.

I liked the pictures and couldnt find a better one. I definitely am not happy with the way the notes came out, but you are right, im not as much of a perfectionist as you are.



Of course, by all means create your own style, but im talking about which techniques to use. When I started on this piece, as soon as I saw the picture I knew I wanted her head to pop up above the rest of the sig, and I wanted the top of the bar of the signature to be uneven somehow. A blue or a purple theme with a musical look (then I searched for music notes and such).

I was never very artistic, so I dont really have a style of my own. I like what other people do better than I do, and if im thieving their style, its just because I am not artistic. I am good at conceptualizing, but terrible at the composition and stylizing phases. I would never place myself in the league of half of the sig makers here, but I can make a decent work that most people would find nice looking. But when it comes down to the critique, my work is full of flaws. And anything I come up with that is unique, you (NPG) dont like it at all (the Mushishi sig and the Berserk sig were 2 of which I havent seen many similar).

The Mushishi sig isn't imaginative. It's a background with a render on the left and some text in the middle.

That's all there is too it. It's just the same as every other signature =/

The berserk sig had some imagination, but it was just a crappy low qual outcome (no offence).

I'm not at all an artist, but I can look around and see things which are common, things which look crap, and work out something which isn't as common which looks good. Like putting the render in the middle instead of the sides!!!

Or the text in the middle! etcetcetc.

Creativity isn't everything though, you have to be able to match it with "skill".

I have no skill, im just having fun with it really and seeing what I can do. I was just sick this weekend and had nothing else better to do, so I made a few signatures. I had a better idea for the Mushishi sig that what came out of it, and imo after looking back on it im not satisfied with the product. I still like my Berserk one, but like a lot of things I enjoy, its doesnt live up to a critique. Not everything has to be tastefully done, imo.
