get a wide screen one, preferably one designed for multi-media.

if your going to download shows then a large hard drive (>100 gigs) and/or dvd burner is essential. hope that helps.

It totally depends on your budget.
But at the moment it few tips would be:
Only buy PCs with DDR2 ram, alot of people are trying to shift old laptops with DDR ram for low prices, and in all honesty, if you want to get a nice laptop memory's essential.
Mobility = less features and higher price tag, so if you plan to move it around, you might want to get a mobile one, but if you want more features you're probably gunna end up paying alot more.

there really is no budget to how much i can spend on my laptop i've worked for it and have about $5,000 just for my laptop (worked loads of extra hours but well worth it) so if there are any add on features to go with it hopefully i can buy it so any suggestions are welcome =D

Are you looking for a desktop replacement, or something that is very portable? This is a big question, and since you want it for downloading and games, it seems like you might just want a desktop replacement, with powerful graphics and processor speeds and lots of hard drive space. Very portable laptops dont even come with cd-rom drives and have slower processors and terrible gaming graphics cards.
IBM make excellent laptops, and are highly recommended if you want a laptop for work/school. they are very reliable and good on battery life. If you want it for gaming, its not so good. Although they do make laptops that are geared more for the desktop replacement user.
It all depends on if you want a heavy, powerful, poor on battery life laptop, or a light, slow, and good on battery life laptop. Then it comes down to quality of the manufacturer and such. From what I hear from computer knowledgable people is that IBM makes the most well-made reliable laptops.

Something like a Toshiba Qosmio is very good for movies and has a nice hard drive, but very heavy and unportable.
You can get expensive gaming laptops from people like Voodoo if you really have loads to spend, but the best Voodoo notebook ways 16lbs, and starts at $4500, but these are the best you can get.

sony vaios are pretty good when it comes to large memories. u can also add on to this an external memory. theyre slick and portable. they come in widescreen and has a 9 hour battery life. it has extremely powerful graphic system and its pretty suited to meet whatever need u have

Don't buy a Vaio, they're overpriced and have nothing in them.

I highly doubt the 9 hour battery life claim. They may claim that, but it is probably with 3 or 4 batteries or something. "Good" battery life is around 5 hours or so with 1 battery.

y dontcha just go over to best buy or circuit city and ask the people there what they think is good. plus its easier to talk to them person to person instead of typing

yea your right but i need some opinions to help make the choce easier ... umm it doesnt have to be portable im just going to use it at my house instead of my whole familys computer so it will be much faster for me when i download naruto episodes and download games and stuff so it doesnt have to be super light or anything but it would be good it it weighted under 100lbs lol umm so a computer with great graphics and stuff is what im really looing for cause if i need it i can just buy extra memory ... umm and as long as it can go about 3 hours with out charging it i'll be fine cause im only going to be using it in my house so i can just charge it while im using it if i really need too ... and thanks everyone for the comments!!

Well, check for good quality gaming laptops from the big names and if you have that much, go for 2gb DDR2 ram, sli graphics and dual core processors

the best gaming computers are supposed to be alienware, but ive heard horrible things about them... Hard drive space doesnt exactly matter, becuase there are external hard drives you can get for fairly cheap now (my bro got a 200gb one for like $30 on black friday). A good graphics card has about 1024 mb of memory (you'll want this if your a serious gamer). You'll prolly want at least 1GB of RAM (again, if you are serious gamer). But for media, i would recomend the media center operating system, cause... its meant for media (thus the name MEDIA center.) Also, i think hyperthreaded is a good thing to have now.

Seriously, do not listen to any of us. From my experience, I tried to take on some advice and I regret it cause I have to return my laptop like 5 times. lol.
Just go with what you think you'll like. All laptops will surely show their specs on the panels. If you can't see them, then you can browse the computer and check them there. If you feel like you are not sure, then ask someone who you truly trust and bring him/her along every time you shop for laptops. That's the best thing you can make sure that you won't regret your laptop cause you always have to keep in mind that ONLY RAM, HD, OPTICAL DRIVES are the parts that you can upgrade. You'll always be stuck with the Mobo, CPU, and GFX card.
