Full Version: Claymore vs Katana

It's just a little debate a friend and I were having the other day. I argued the Katana, saying that the weight of the claymore and the fighting style used with it was too slow and clumsy when fighting a Katana. He said the claymore was strong and could cut the katana in two. I saw an episode of myth busters where the proved that it was impossible for one sword to cut another one in two, although it is possible to snap it, so I don't know about that arguement. He also argued that anyone useing a claymore would probably have the armor and all with it, and against a samari wearing only leather armor the claymore wielder would win. I still think the katana's better, and intend to do some research to prove my friend wrong, but I'd like your opinion also. Maybe you could give me some ammo for this debate or just tell me I'm wrong.

i prefer the katana....because it provides average cutting power and much agility....when in comparison to claymore..though it has above average cutting power...it's too heavy and decreases the attack spead of the user a lot....and small speed is a big disadvantage in a fight...

so i prefer the KATANA!
Jaro
Me to, I am for katana. Yes claymore has more raw power, but you would have to be very strong to wield it, and you would probably get tired soon. And I know that masterwork katana can cut metal, if a sward master uses it properly.

I think that the Katana is a better weapon, muhay.

katana is surely a better weapon...for cutting yourself.İt needs more training and fighting must be done more carefully.
but katanas rule...what can i say.

Ahh Yes, which is truly better? Now are we talking true Kantanas or the short handled ones? Difference being that the old Katanas the hilt was the distance from your hand to your elbow and now-a-days it is just bigger than your two hands together.

The reason for the change was to reduce the power of the katana and make it lighter and more nibble to use for sport rather than killing.

Now long hilted Katana versus a Claymore I would call the Katana a winner.

But the short hilted Katana would lose more to a claymore for the lack of strength in comparison to the Claymore.

But all in all my 9mm would beat both.
Jaro
Short katana AKA wakizashi is a of hand weapon. Or a weapon for weaker hand. If someone is using wakizashi in his primary hand then he will probably be attacking from behind, cause that is weapon of assassins.
Paradox886
I think I'd go with a true katana...I'm planning on taking lessons if I can find anyone to teach me...still looking

katana would hands down win, think about it, a samurai sword is made perfectly for parrying attacks, the katana user could simply use the claymore own weight against it and through it off balence then quickly deal with the wielder of the claymore, but for the record clsymores are still awsome, its just a bad match up

Claymore has more attacking advantage than katana even if the latter has a higher speed of manipulation
ceverson
depended if a person had armor or not, katanas dont have enough weight in the blade to damage/ break armor, claymores on the other hand do, so if a person was wearing armor claymore but anything else katana b/c speed

Depends who made it, how old it is, and who's wielding it.

Some people use katana two-handed, you know?
Jaro
Well, unless you have special training you use katana with two hands. Wakizashi is one handed weapon.

Yeah, I'm going with two 9mm handguns. pistols.gif

You can't declare one of these 2 weapons better than the other since there are thousands variations of situations which influence the effectiveness of the weapons.

If you want to argue about the effectiveness you have to define a fixed situation, including the the physical and mental attributes of the wielders, the location and the relevant goals like killing the enemy or escaping (e.g. in a certain time).

So please define us the combat situation so we can give our "professional" ( tongue.gif ) opinions.

claymore the bomb things explodes when you walk near it? I always use those in Battleifeld 2..
deadoh
wow i guess there are some experts here in warfare...

for me i prefer a katana since it is lightweight and easy to swing around.
Paradox886
Meh, I really don't care any more. I'm going to learn how to wield a katana just because it looks cooler, and since I don't think I'm ever going to go against someone with a claymore (which if I do, I'll have my answer I guess) I don't see how it matters.

Anyway- continue...

The katana to me is much better than the claymore because its lighter and easier to use. It also looks awsome.
Cloudmaster88
I would have to say the Katana wins this one, the Katana is lighter and faster, the Claymore is hella heavy and slow....
itachi81
Katana because you can dual wield so you can use one to block and the other to slash and since katanas are light weight they don't weigh you down when running
