I guess you can say Harry Potter, if you want to, but I'm asking more of classic books from really olde, like 100+ years, but whatever. Doesn't bother me one way of the other.

Mine would have to be Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luó Guànzhōng. Great book, and heroes.

Anyways, there's others worth mentioning, Lord of the Flies, Lord of the Rings (though I've only read The Hobbit), Book of Five Rings, and The Art of War.

There's others, but meh....Let's hear your's.

Your not going to get many responses top tis topic with a forum full of 10 year olds.

But I love the book "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. It is a classic book and is among one of my favorites of all time. It is an excellent book that explores the notion of too much technology and censorship It is like Orwell's 1984, but imo a bit more relevant to modern day society. I recomend everybody read this book. It is a reaql eye-opener. Especially you Crudus, if you havent read it, I highly recommend it to you.

Crudus Erus
I may. And, this site's medium is more like 14-16 years old, and I've known many 14-16 year oldes who have read stuff that I've only recently started reading. Manga's a perfect example. LOL

Plus, I did say they could say Harry Potter so meh....
DaTConDoR
I like to read . I can name books off my head written this century I have read that I consider to be "Classics": Lolita(Vladimir Nabokov), 1984(George Orwell), Catch-22(Joseph Heller),A Clockwork Orange(Anthony Burgess), The Sound and The Fury(William Faulkner), The Catcher IN The Rye(J.D. Sallinger) The Fountainhead(Ayn Rand), All quiet on the western Front(Eric Remarque), Slaughter-House Five(Kurt Vonnegut) Naked Lunch(William S. Burroughs), Gravity's Rainbow(Thomas Pyncheon)

But if you want books 100 plus years that are good I have a couple: Don Quixote(Miguel De Cervantes), War and Peace and Anna Karenina(Leo Tostoy), Shogun(James Clavell), Ulysses(James Joyce)

Even though I appreciate J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter for bringing many young kids to literature who would have never discovered it without them. It still makes me want to vomit everytime I read it.

Yeah, I'd say that right Crodus I'm 16, 17 in September.
But I recommend 1984 to anyone.

Edit: Crodus what is a more in-depth take of Tseng's Art of War. What is it about, I hear it is good from some, others not so much.

I was kind of exaggerating a little, but you know what I mean.

1984 is a good book, but is a bit overrated. I think that Brave New World is everything that 1984 is, and more, yet it gets no attention at all.
serene_kismet
it's "The Catcher IN the Rye", DaTConDoR, not "The Catcher AND The Rye"

anyways, i like that book too. I like Jane Eyre and when I was little i used to read the "Little House in the...." series.

The Sound and The Fury is whack...

and The Art of War is a book about basically the art of war... war strategies, deceptions, spies and all that good stuff. i gave it as a gift to someone who wanted it, but before i gave it i open to a random page and read some of it.
DaTConDoR
It's been a couple years since I've read the book. But I have read it, I know the significance of the title as well, how Holden wants to keep children playing in the Rye field from falling over the edge of the cliff when they get too close. Don't be so anal, I understand you want to defend the book, but sometimes I make a lot of Errors when I type.

The Sound and the Fury is a great book, the only thing not so great about it is Faulkner's complicated prose. It took me a minute too get the hang of it, but I would also understand how you would think it would be "Wack", its not for everyone.

Brave New World gets a lot of attention, and is reguarded as one of the best books of all time. It seems like 1984 gets more because it is more suited for a younger audience like ourselfs, not saying its a book made for teenagers, the content in it suits us better.
serene_kismet
i'm not being anal about it or being defensive about the book,DaTConDoR ... i'm enlightening you're a** so next time u won't make the same mistake in the future.

got it?

good.

Very true, and Crudus, calling Harry Potter a classic earns you today's dumbass award tongue.gif

Oh, and The Comte de Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas is an absolutely amazing book, then again, so is the Three Musketeers also written by him.

Oh, and Crudus, I revoke that trophy since you mentioned the Art of War, an awesome book.
serene_kismet
correct me if i'm wrong, did "Comte de Monte Cristo" became a movie, "The Count of Monte Cristo" ? Is it base on the book?

I love that movie.

The movie destroyed the story.

The story is sooo much more in depth, and better tbh.

Read my post thoroughly, next time. I said nothing about it being classic, though it is debatable. Besides, I knew someone, pressumably someone who is 11-14 year of age, would quite possibly, see the word "book" only, neglect to read my post, and instantly put Harry Potter. ^_~

EDIT: Never saw your "EDIT" Condor. But, what do you mean?

Whoa! Datcondor! serious respect for you man, you've read every book i always wanted to read but got too lazy to do so. If you are interested in chinese phillo and war arts, read the orriginal chinese versions cuz all interpreted/translated/bridged ones lose some of their original meanings.
This sounds silly but i've read the english version of Dao De before and i'm reading the simplified chinese version of it and I find there's so much missing in the english version.

I also love the illiad. I'm reading it right now from Adobe which is horrible and difficult cuz there're alot of errors to it but, it's fun!
mrharrylime
Mine would be Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
BigChris18
The best book of all times would have to be Homer's "The Oddesy", and probably "Art of War" and Tale of Two Cities" (correct me if I'm wrong) by Charles Dickens.

Fahrenheit 451 was a great book, still wanting to read 1984, very badly...and Don Quijote was a great story ;p I loved it alot! I also liked Beowulf. I also want to read the art of war, I have heard good things about it. The Great Gatsbyand The Catcher in The rye as AaronNC04 mentioned was another great book. I also enjoyed Plato's Phaedo. Another favorite is Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy and Foucault's Discipline and Punish. And the Original Grims Fairy Tales.

and yes BigChris18, The Oddessy is a great book, and the Iliad is a another great book which you should read if you enjoyed the Oddessy ^_^
Laughing Shino
That's right I never got to read 1984, wasn't that written by George Orwell? Catcher in the Rye and Of Mice and Men are good novels also . . . The Oddesy is another great story . . .
Emiko-chan
oh yea and how could I forget ANIMAL FARM?! That was an awesome book I read in gradeschool....another great author I like is Gary Pulsen, who wrote dogsong, and the Hatchet series.
Laughing Shino
In grade school? . . . uh. . . Just had to read it for my college class. . . guess I'm behind. . . ohmy.gif
Emiko-chan
ohh...eehh well I did read it during the summer of 7th grade...it was for a special program I was in for super geniouses like me ;p lol yea I had to take a test to get into the program ^^ it was easy though. But maybe the college class covered the book more deeply? we talked about the books social issues and about the treatment of the animals and how it represented social class. ^^ fun fun book to read.
Laughing Shino
Ha ha . . . yeah at first just looking at it . . . it was a good story line about pigs taking control over the farm . . . but in deep meaning it was about the hardship of Cold War . . . bash.gif
Emiko-chan
really? I didn't get that in grade school... 'o' ..... ^^" well I gotta ask, did anyone read animorphs or goosebumps in gradeschool? those were my top two series I read back then ^^
Laughing Shino
I was more into goosebumps and other scary story books like . . . what was it called . . . I think it was "Scary Stories" or something like "Where the Sidewalk Ends"
Emiko-chan
ooh sheil silverstein is my FAVORITE! I love all his books! ^_^
david20co
goosebumps was the best when i was like 7 or 8 i loved those books. now that i think about it i still should have like a big collection. i read animal farm, the lord of the flies, a bunch from shakespeare, born in sin, lord of the rings, the hobbit, the harry potter books i read like 5 times, i live those books. also, the art of war, kind of interesting; brother inthe land; i read some books from oversees, some in spanish and some really basic french books. all of this was before i turned 12 so i cant remember everything.

chillbert
One of my favorite books is Fahrenheit 451, I had to read it for school it was one of the best books I have ever read
energy
why would anyone from the 21st century want to read a book from over 100 years ago? text from back then is barely understandable to people nowadays because it's written in old english

anyway, these books aren't as old as 100 years +..but here are some of my favorite "classics";

animal farm & 1984..that's pretty much all I can think of..I don't read anything except the newspaper D;
Laughing Shino
Well Squiggly lines are my favorite I use to write them back when I was 3 . . . books that needs to be deciphered are cool but . . . It'll take years to decode one book and finally read it . . . Reading other peoples translations are not always accurate!. . . bash.gif
david20co
i dont get why ppl like 1984 so much. i think it sucked, no offence to those of you who liked it.

~sion~
kamikun
The Art of War is a great book too.
Laughing Shino
Well never got to read 1984, it was just brought up beacuse many schools force young minds to read a literature that involved history. . . mellow.gif
