I started watching Naruto from the beginning and was wondering why he didn't want the 3rd to know he was in the village when Orachimaru was getting ready to invade the konoha? Why did he not fight Orachimaru and try to save the 3rd? Has this been revealed? Was he angry at the 3rd for not killing Orachimaru when he had the chance? Just curious if anyone knows.

I think the main reason he didn't want the 3rd to know he was there was because he was gathering information on Akatsuki and didn't want to stay in Konoha, plus I don't think he expected the Konoha Invasion.
But I was also thinking the same thing, because if Jiraiya was there, no way would Orochimaru have killed Sandaime, even if he had Kimimaro with him.

maybe bc he's to busy writing his Icha Icha Novels... he wouldn't spend his time visiting 3rd...
Jiraya:3rd Hokage... he's such a pain in the a**... i won't waste my time here in Konoha visiting that old geezer...
IMO...

I just thought maybe someone reading the manga would know if there was a reason because it is further along and probably much more informative. I don't think it's that he didn't want to be bothered to see him though because when he acknowledged the 3rd was fighting he even said "dont die old man" which makes me think he cared on some level. When Ebuisa or whatever the elite teacher's name is asked him why he didn't want to see the 3rd he had a pretty serious look on his face. It just made me wonder because things may have happened much differently had he fought Orachimaru. Maybe I am over-thinking it all, just made me curious. Thanks for the replies.

jiraiya was not mad at the 3rd for not killing Oro cuz these two were just like sasuke and naruto when Oro left the village Jiraiya took it just as hard as naruto took it when sasuke left

LOL...
don't exactly know the answer... but just a theory...
maybe...
Jiraya and Orochimaru had a relationship and they don't want 3rd to know bc he might suffer a heart attack...

Maybe Jiraiya was doing his "research"

maybe jiyaiya didn't expect the invasion of Konoha, and then he said "dont die old man" (pertaining to the 3rd) i think had he known this, he would have helped much earlier. i dont know where jiraiya went and got late, but i agree that even if kimimaru was with oro, they won't win if jiraiya joins konoha.

^I agree 100%. Jiraiya had isolated himself from Konoha (maybe even because he blamed himself for not being able to change Oro), but if he had known about the invasion he would have stepped in--which he did as soon as he could, it just wasn't quick enough.
Also, if you think about it from a purely plot-based POV, it's just a lot cooler to have an Oro-Sandaime battle, and then a 3-Sannin battle later on. If Jiraiya stepped in and saved the day, the threat to Konoha wouldn't be as dire, and it would kind of diminish the significance of everything going on.

I think he knew something was going to happen in Konoha, but not exactly what. Jiraiya seems to have a very good and informative information network outside of Konoha. I do not think it was a coincidence he showed up in Konoha after years of being away on 'research.' As much as the dumbnut he lets people believe he is, Jiraiya is not lacking in information. I think the don't die old man, was an instinctive guilt reaction to not doing more, even though he suspected something was wrong.
The Sannin battle was awesome, as was the fight between Orochimaru and Sandaime Hokage.

I think he put alot of faith into the 3rd,and didn't expect orochimaru to be able to kill him(after all,it IS the 3rd...since orochimaru was Jiraiya's old ally, maybe he thought that he might have been somewhat weaker,or barely stronger, making him think that the 3rd could take him.)

I think he didn't want him to know he was there because he knew that he would probably be looking for a replacement as Hokage and didn't want to discuss it.

I think it's possible Jiraiya knew the whole thing but it came down to helping the third or saving the ninja getting cut down in the streets, I don't think the third would be happy if his life was spared at the cost of the ninja that server under him. Also the third viewed orochimaru as a mistake he needed to correct and it wasn't Jiraiyas place to interfere.

he did not know of the invasion, but helped as soon as the invasion took place
he came to konoha to do research for his new book, so he didnt really bother anyone that he came back.
and when orochimaru took place, he helped.
he couldnt help the 3rd of course cus of the seal barrier

I cant remember exactly, but i dont think Jiraiya knew about the invasion. I also dont remember him being in Kohona at the time. He clearly would have gone to help the 3rd if he was in the village. If u have read the manga, u would know that jiraiya, while he does have his annoynaces with the 3rd would never leave him there to die. If i am wrong about him not being there then someone please correct me.

dude.. there's no need to revive a dead thread... but while I'm here.. Jiraiya was in the village (he taught and met Naruto right in the hot springs after the chuunin exams when Kakashi abandoned Naruto's training)… Jiraiya was busy fending off the snake summons etc. that the sound shinobi were using... also the fact that the Sound four had a nearly indestructible barrier around the fight, Jiraiya wouldn’t have been much help there… even if he could have gotten through it he would have been delayed by the barrier... the Sandaime also would have wanted Jiraiya to limit casualties as much as possible... saving an old man when the village was in danger? the right choice is quite clear…

If he let orochimaru knew it, Orochimaru could built up a ultimate army for defying him.
