Tsunade is the granddaughter of the First Hokage and a student of the Third Hokage, Sarutobi. She is one of the Legendary Three of Konoha along with Jiraiya and Orochimaru, who were her teammates under Sarutobi’s leadership. Tsunade has a special talent for precision chakra control, making her a natural medical ninja; it is also the source of her superhuman strength. Although Tsunade is over fifty years old, she maintains a very young appearance through constant chakra control. Because of Tsunade’s old age, Naruto refers to her as Baa-chan (old lady) and appears to be the only one who can get away with it.

Tsunade has a natural talent for medical research, and her healing abilities and knowledge of poison antidotes were contributed to Konoha’s successes in the last Great Ninja War. The necklace Tsunade wears was inherited from her grandfather, the First Hokage. It contains a special chakra crystal that is said to have allowed the First to amplify his power to control Tailed Beasts. Tsunade also believes the necklace to be cursed because the two previous people she gave the necklace to (Nawaki and Dan) both died of violent deaths soon after.

After the death of her younger brother Nawaki and lover Dan in the war, Tsunade became disillusioned and left Konoha to wander the countryside with Ton-ton, her pet pig, and Dan’s niece, Shizune, who became her apprentice. Tsunade is a compulsive gambler and indulged in her habit during her travels. But Tsunade has incredibly bad luck and gained the nickname of "The Legendary Sucker" for the large sums of debt she accumulated from her continuous gambling losses. However, it is her gambling habits which allowed Jiraiya and Naruto to track her down in the Search for Tsunade arc. Because of Naruto’s determination and heroic actions, Tsunade decided to entrust her necklace one last time to someone she cared about and gave it to Naruto.

Tsunade became the Fifth Hokage of Konoha after returning to the village. Her short temper often makes her irritable while conducting the more mundane duties of a Hokage. Shizune became her assistant and aids her in many administrative duties. During the period between Naruto part 1 and 2, Tsunade recognized Sakura’s innate chakra control ablities and trained her on to be her next apprentice.
